I’m fortunate enough to have been chosen to take part in this tour—my very first book tour through @turnthepagetours. What attracted me to this book by @katharyn_blair was the synopsis. This is a post-apocalyptic story with an unconventional heroine: a typical, not-particularly-special girl named Charlotte whose entire existence is overshadowed by her two, much more talented sisters, Harlow and Vanessa. An unimaginably cruel curse called the Crimson overtakes society and those afflicted with it, essentially turning them into zombies—unable to carry on their lives with meaning, destined to roam hungry for those that haven’t been afflicted: the curseclean.
Prior to beginning the book, I read more about Katharyn Blair and why she chose to write this novel. Her own personal experiences influenced the personality of Charlotte, our atypical world-saver. We read and watch so many stories told about heroes with special powers, traits of strength, and physical strength that come to the rescue. What I loved most about this story was the fact that Katharyn Blair chose a character that is imperfect, not particularly strong, has endured traumatic experiences, isn’t exactly confident and yet when faced with an unimaginable choice—she begins her quest to save her sisters and ultimately to try to save the world.
All in all, I think this is a novel that we’ve all been waiting for—a heroine who’s certainly more human than superhero, with her own trauma and anxiety in a situation that could break the strongest of heroes yet she shows us that it doesn’t break her spirit, her courage, nor her resilience.
